The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is an intentional group of more than 400K persons with diabetics, their families & caregivers, more than one million volunteers, and more than 800 staff members, plus a professional society of about 16,500 health care professionals, all working together for one goal: to Stop Diabetes. The ADA website is a rich source of resources for medical professionals, researchers, students, and patients. The ADA’s mission is to prevent and cure diabetes, the most rapidly increasing health condition in the United States. The ADA invests money in research and raises money to advance the field of diabetes control and prevention. the The American Diabetes Association hosts many interesting projects and events including Diabetes Camps for children and teens, Diabetes EXPOs featuring healthy food, fitness, and diabetes education and information, awareness programs for at-risk communities, American Diabetes Month®, and Diabetes Alert Day®. Did you know…. diabetes was discovered in 1910 by Sir Edward Albert Sharpey-Schafter during his study of the pancreas which lead him to discover a substance, insulin, that would normally be produced in non-diabetics? Insulin comes from the Latinword insula, meaning island, referencing the insulin-producing islets of Langerhans in the pancreas.
