The Academic Pediatric Association (APA) was founded in 1960 when leaders in pediatrics realized the need for pediatric outpatient departments to better serve patients, as well as the need for teaching students and pediatric physicians in training. They currently have a membership of approximately 2,000 health care professionals, including physicians, nurse practitioners, doctoral trained professionals, students, and other child health experts. The APA has co-sponsored the largest pediatric research meeting in the world, the annual Pediatric Academic Societies meeting, for the past 20 years. They also publish Academic Pediatrics and have 38 special interest groups, which focus on specific areas of child health, for members to join.
