The Academy for Sports Dentistry (ASD) was founded in 1983 to connect dentists, physicians, athletic trainers, coaches, dental technicians, and educators in the field of sports dentistry. The academy focuses on issues dealing with the dental needs of athletes at risk of sports injuries, including contusions, tooth fractures, TMJ, jaw dislocation, and other injuries commonly occurring in athletes of high-risk sports such as football, rugby, ice hockey, martial arts and basketball. The ASD also hosts an annual symposium consisting of scientific and business sessions dealing with this growing health care concern. A huge focus for the group is the fabrication of professionally diagnosed and designed custom made mouthguards, which protect athletes the most thoroughly. The ASD envisions that, as more athletes become involved, there will be more opportunities for their members to be “Part of the Team Behind the Team.”
