The American Heart Association (AHA), founded in 1924, is a professional and voluntary organization with over 22 million volunteers and supporters. Its mission, not surprisingly since the leading cause of death in the US is heart disease, is to eliminate cardiovascaular diseases including heart disease, stroke and arteriosclerosis. The Association funds innovation in research, creates treatment guidelines for healthcare professionals to ensure the best patient care, and participates in public outreach in order to educate health care consumers about healthy lifestyle choices and heart disease prevention. The causes and events supported by the American Heart Association include” Go Red for Women”, “My Heart My Life”, and “Power to End Stroke”.
